Tax Return Organiser

A free worksheet for organising an Australian individual tax return before you lodge: income, work-related deductions, private health, super, and a document checklist, all in one page. Built because gathering everything before you sit down in myTax (or hand it to a tax agent) is the part that actually takes time.

Personal details

ATO · Pages 1–2

Income

ATO · Item 1–7

Pull salary and wages from your income statement in myGov (usually "Tax ready" by mid-July) rather than payslips: the ATO pre-fills from the same source, and it should match exactly.

Total income (excl. franking credits)$0.00

Capital gains

ATO · Item 18

Enter raw gains before any discount — the 50% CGT discount is applied automatically to gains on assets held 12 months or more. Capital losses are applied to your non-discounted gains first (the most tax-effective order), then to discounted gains, before the discount is applied to whatever remains.

Net capital gain (after losses & discount)$0.00

Work-related deductions

ATO · D1–D5

Three tests apply to every item: you paid for it yourself and weren't reimbursed, it directly relates to earning your income, and you have a record. For self-education (D4), the course/certification needs to maintain or improve skills in your current role: a CCNA, AZ-900, or Security+ pursued while working in IT support is a reasonable example.

Total work-related deductions$0.00

Gifts, donations & other deductions

ATO · D9–D10

Private health & superannuation

ATO · Item M1–M2, IT2

Offsets & study/training debts

ATO · Item 6, 7

Assumes an Australian resident, using 2025–26 rates, the full HELP/HECS marginal repayment bands, real SAPTO and family Medicare levy thresholds, and standard CGT loss-and-discount netting. SAPTO uses taxable income as a proxy for "rebate income" (the real SAPTO test also counts reportable super contributions and net investment losses, not collected here). Medicare Levy Surcharge still only uses single-person thresholds, not family ones. General estimate only, not a lodgement figure.
